Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you might need to know about saving Instagram content with Spector.
General
Is Spector free to use?
Yes. Every feature on Spector is free, with no usage caps and no hidden “pro” tier behind a paywall. The site is supported by display advertising, which is why you may see ads on some pages.
Do I need an Instagram account to download?
No account is required on either side. You do not log in to Instagram through Spector, and you do not create an account on Spector. Just paste a public link and we handle the rest.
Can Spector download from private accounts?
No, and this is by design. Spector only works with publicly visible posts. If a profile is set to private, its content is not accessible to us — and we believe respecting that boundary is the right thing to do.
Does Spector work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. Spector is a web tool, so anything with a modern browser — Safari on iOS, Chrome or Firefox on Android, plus all desktop browsers — works the same way. There is no app to install.
Will the original creator know I downloaded their post?
Instagram does not notify creators when someone views or downloads a public post. For Stories specifically, watching them through Spector does not show up in the creator’s viewer list because we do not load the story through your logged-in Instagram session.
Is it legal to download Instagram videos?
Generally, yes — for personal use such as keeping your own content, archiving, research or accessibility. Reposting someone else’s work commercially without permission can violate copyright and Instagram’s Terms. Read our Terms and Disclaimer for the long version.
Video downloads
What video formats does Spector support?
Instagram serves videos as MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. Spector returns the file in exactly the format Instagram stores it, with no transcoding.
What is the maximum video quality I can get?
Spector returns whatever resolution the creator originally uploaded. Most feed videos are 1080p; some newer reels and IGTV uploads from professional accounts are 4K. We do not upscale lower-resolution videos artificially.
Can I download a specific resolution like 720p?
Instagram exposes a single resolution per post. If you specifically need a smaller file, save the original and re-encode it locally with a tool like HandBrake — this gives you full control without lossy double-encoding by us.
Photos & profile pictures
Can Spector download multi-photo carousels?
Yes. Paste any post that contains a carousel and Spector will return all photos in the carousel as separate JPG files, in the order they appear in the post.
Can I download somebody’s profile picture?
Yes — paste the URL of any public profile (for example instagram.com/username) and select the Photo tab. Spector returns the full-resolution version, not the small thumbnail you see on the profile page.
Why do screenshots look worse than the file Spector returns?
Screenshots capture the rendered pixels of your screen and re-encode them as JPEG or PNG, which compounds compression. Spector returns the original JPG that Instagram stores on its servers, with no extra compression step.
Reels
Will the audio of the reel be preserved?
Yes. The downloaded MP4 keeps the original audio track exactly as the reel was published — voiceovers, music, sound effects, ambient audio, all of it.
Can I download reels that use licensed Instagram music?
Spector returns the audio that Instagram embedded into the reel’s MP4. If the original creator had licensing rights and you intend to repost the audio elsewhere, you may still need to clear those rights yourself for your own use case.
Why do reels sometimes download as silent videos?
Some reels — especially ones flagged for copyright in certain regions — are served by Instagram as muted. In that case the file Spector returns will reflect the muted version. There is no way for us to add audio that Instagram did not include.
Stories
Can Spector save Stories anonymously?
Yes. Because Spector does not log in to Instagram on your behalf, viewing or saving a public Story through us does not register your name in the creator’s “viewers” list.
Can I download Stories from private accounts?
No. We do not bypass privacy settings. If you are friends with the creator and you can see the Story while logged into Instagram, you can save it directly through Instagram itself.
How long does a Story stay accessible through Spector?
Stories disappear from public view 24 hours after they are posted. Once they are gone from Instagram, Spector cannot retrieve them either — there is nothing left for us to fetch.
IGTV & long videos
How long can an IGTV video be?
IGTV originally allowed videos up to 60 minutes. Most IGTV content has since been merged into the regular feed and Reels system, but the underlying long videos are still accessible. Spector handles them the same way as any other video.
Will large IGTV downloads time out?
Spector pulls a direct CDN link from Instagram and your browser downloads the file directly from there. Large files transfer at your network’s native speed and are not bottlenecked by our servers.
Highlights
Can I download a whole Highlight album at once?
Yes. Paste a Highlight URL and Spector returns every story in the album as a separate file, ready to save together.
Can Spector save the Highlight cover image?
Yes — the cover image is included in the result list as a separate JPG, in addition to the individual stories.
Legal & safety
Is using Spector safe for my device?
Yes. Spector is a website, not an app, so there is nothing to install. We do not request any permissions, and the connection is encrypted with TLS. Browser-level antivirus and pop-up protections continue to work normally.
Does Spector store the files I download?
No. Files travel directly from Instagram’s servers to your device. We do not save copies, and we do not log which links you submit beyond minimal performance metrics that are anonymised. See the Privacy Policy for the full breakdown.
How do I report a copyright issue?
If you are a rights holder and you believe a public post that was downloaded through Spector infringes your copyright, send a takedown notice to our DMCA address. Templates and details are on the DMCA page.
Troubleshooting
Why do some downloads fail with “unexpected error”?
The most common reasons are: the post was deleted; the account became private after you copied the link; the URL was pasted incompletely; or Instagram briefly rate-limited our parser. Wait a moment and try again, or paste a fresh link.
Why does Spector reject my link as “invalid URL”?
Spector requires a full Instagram URL that starts with https://www.instagram.com/. Shortened links, mobile-share fragments, or copy-paste artefacts that include extra text usually trigger this error. Paste only the URL itself, ending with the trailing slash.
